What wavelengths Do Most Laser Devices Use?
Most hair removal devices use one specific type of laser wavelength. The most common ones are the 755nm, 808nm and 1064nm laser wavelengths. Each of these has unique characteristics and different absorption levels in Melanin. Melanin is the chromophore that determines a person’s skin and hair color. How many treatments will I need?
The amount of treatments needed is based on the color and coarseness of the hair. We typically say 6-10 treatments. The darker and thicker the hair, the better it responds to the laser therefore needing less treatments. Hair has three phases of growth: active growth phase, an intermediate non-growth phase, and a resting phase with no follicle present. Duration of the hair growth cycles vary depending on the area of the body. The laser can only reduce the hair that is currently in an active growth cycle so multiple treatments are necessary over a time span of 4-8 week intervals. End results may not be visible for months after treatment.
The treated hairs may take 7-14 days to exfoliate and may appear to be “growing” during this time. After treatment do not pluck, wax or use a chemical exfoliant between treatments. Do not shave or trim the treated area for the first 3 days.
Anyone on hormone replacement therapy may need additional treatments, especially men. If you are on HRT please let the provider know prior to treatment so we can set you up for success.
